hire a steam cleaner to come in.. tell them ahead of time that you need an enzyematic (these enzyemes are the ONLY ONLY thing that will kill the cat urine smell) cleaner because of the cat urine thing. that smell will never go away without it.
it will prolly be about 150-200 dollars depending on the size of your house... call around and bargin with the cleaners. also try to make a deal with them that if the smell doesnt go away the first time, then they will come back a second time for free to do it again.. or what not. I know it is pricey, but it will be worth it. YOU can do it yourself- rent the machine somewhere- but trust me, it is THE biggest pain in the rear EVER. But if u r willing to sacrifice your entire day, and are able to remain patient then do it yourself.
When you finally save up some money- I would just replace the carpets.
In regards to the vacuum cleaner, chances are that it is already dirty with cat urine. I would toss it and get a new one, but dont use it until you get your carpets cleaned.
EW I am sooo sorry about your carpets. My boyfriend has a b*tch cat that pees everywhere it pleases, so I know how it is.
Good luck honey!

Sorry, there is no inexpensive way to do it. A few years back my brother had the same problem. He lived with the odor for five years, using every cleaning method available including professional cleaning. The problem was that the urine had been repeatedly left in the same place, probably never cleaned by the original owners and had seeped through the padding and into the hardwood beneath.
He finally gave up and ripped up the carpet and refinished the floor. No more odor.
You can try a new product that I just love. I use it in the groom shop on skunk and cat spray odors. When used early it has the most perfect effect. It gets totally rid of the odor. But on an old odor, I can't say. 'Thiotrol' is available at the vets office. At about $15.00 a bottle, it might be worth the try.

I think you should just pull up the carpet, and have hardwood floors for a while. When I bought my house, my eyes actually burned from the smell. I had the pros come out, but the first hot day, the odor came right back. The smell is ammonia, and long-term exposure to it is very dangerous. I would just rip out the carpet, toss the vacuum (a Dyson, that's too bad!), and save money for new carpet, if that's what you want. Hopefully, the wood floors aren't ruined, too. Good luck!

I hate to tell you, but there is nothing on earth that can get rid of the smell of cat pee. Cat urine is so acidic and strong, and it absorbs into everything it touches. Cleaning the carpet will make it clean, but it won't take away the odor. If I were you, I'd clean the carpet and put down powdered carpet deodorizer every few days and then vacuum. This stuff works really well, and it will make your home easier to live in until you can afford carpet.

Change the carpet and the pad! paint your walls, etc. This will help remove what's in the carpet and will cover the smell of dog and will make the house smell new again. Also, change your furnace filters and vacuum out the ducts, or better yet- have them professionally cleaned. You're gutsy buying a house like that. Good Luck! how can people be so NASTY!!!

Personally I'd dump the carpet - the cat pee will have soaked through and into the underlay as well.
Summer is coming so now is a good time to be carpet free - give you the chance to scrub the floor and get it all aired out.
Also you may want to consider the likelihood of the carpet being infested with fleas which will soon start to appear with the warmer weather.

If it is urine it will have soaked through to underlay, possibly even floorboards so removing all the smell will be tough.Look for carpet cleaners to hire or ask around and see if you can borrow a carpet shampooer such as a vax.Failing that, not a lot you can do apart from taking up all the carpets ,and replacing them with rugs,or sanding down your floorboards.

Just vacuuming will help. You can put down baking soda to try and soak up some of the smell (leave it for 15 minutes or so and vacuum it up).
If it's the whole house, you might want to consider having it professionally cleaned at some point.

I have always had problems with this!
Sometimes fabric freshners work.
You can get something from the pet shop but it does cost a bit.
Usually the best thing is to get rid of the carpet. Is there a wooden floor under the carpet that would be okay?

you may ruin your vac. the smell might linger in the sweeper. have your carpets cleaned professionally. i had the same problem and spent a fortune on cleaners and home remedies when it would have been cheaper to have it done. cat urine is one of the most difficult odors to get rid of.
