Wait until your first return has been processed. Then you will have to file an amended return using form 1040X. You have up to 3 years to file an amended return.
You will have to file the 1040X on paper not electronically and they take longer to be processed than regular tax returns so you may have to wait several weeks if you are expecting a refund based on the amended information.

You need to file the 1040x.
You can fill out the 1040x for any return that had activity in the last 7 calender years (so if you had an extension for 2005 and only paid that return in June 2006... you have until June 2013 (june 2006+7 years) to amend that 2005 return.
So you do not really need to do this before 4-15, you CAN wait 7 years, but since it is more money back to you, you should probably not wait that long.
However, I would wait a few weeks before mailing in your 1040x. If for some reason the IRS files your 1040x BEFORE your 1040, there may be computer problems.. that is a Small probability of problems, but waiting a week or two can't hurt that much.
luck....

You have three years to amend your return using a form 1040X. Since you'll be getting a refund for the amendment, there won't be any interest or penalties if it's after the 4-17-06 deadline.
While you're amending anyway, if you missed the telephone excise tax credit, be sure to put that on too.

Taxgurl has it right. It is 3 years, not 7 years, unless the 1040X is based on bad debt or worthless securities.

Yes, you can file an amended return at any time. I believe it's form 1040x -- I have included the website below for your research.
I believe you can submit back 7 years from the current year, but you will want to verify that with the IRS.

You probably need to file an amended return. It is just like filing the original but with new entries.
