Section 201 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) sets an annual minimum family-sponsored preference limit of 226,000.
The worldwide level for annual employment-based preference immigrants is at least 140,000.
Section 202 prescribes that the per-country limit for preference immigrants is set at 7% of the total annual family-sponsored and employment-based preference limits, i.e., 25,620.
The dependent area limit is set at 2%, or 7,320.
In The "Security through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy (STRIVE) Act of 2007 (H.R. 1645)" there would be an absolute limit of 180,000 H1b visas immigrants per year.
The annual cap on employment-based immigrant visas would be increased from 140,000 to 290,000, with a separate cap for spouses and children set at 800,000.
The Act proposes a new visa classification for temporary guest workers, the "H-2C," which would be valid for three years and renewable for three more. The annual numerical limit would be 400,000.

Yes there are set limits on the number of legal immigrants.
For a good reason.
The fact that millions of illegal aliens are pouring across our borders is absolute disrespect for our nation, our laws, and every single honest decent person who waits in line to immigrate legally to the USA.
People who jump in front of other people in line are rude, they think they are better than everyone else, that they do not have to wait their turn.
It is the same with illegal immigrants, but beyond rude, beyond disrespectful, they are dishonest liars and theives, and from the moment they set foot on US soil they are CRIMINALS, who, by US federal law, should all be deported.

i herd on the news last week, the count they came up with is 1 million. there is different visas for different things. but the total was 1 million in all. we can't take more. Americans are already being put out of work. how long does our govt think the system can handle unemployed Americans with kids. what about people who don't have kids and can't get help? it's gotten out of hand.

If U.S. corporations would stop impoverishing the world, everyone wouldn't be trying to leave their home country and come here. The wealthy faction of the right-wing causes the very immigration problem that the mentally inferior faction of the right-wing complains about.
