Nothing can tell us this except direct enlightenment experience. Science and religion -- as well as our dualistic brains -- are constrained by the universe/context they're in. The Mystery of Existence can not be grasped by a dualistic mind that sees cause and effect and start and end. No cosmology (big bang, infinite/endless cycle of universe creation/destruction, etc.) can talk about the fact that something just always existed & that this something (process, potential, whatever) had the necessary elements for a universe. When the mind starts to REALLY consider the issue of something always existing, it's VERY unsettling. 99.99% of us from all faiths and no faith don't really grasp the issue here --

No one knows what was going on or existed before the 'big-bang'. I guess matter and energy have always existed.
The human mind is used to thinking in terms of 'design and purpose'. but there may be none, or no beginning The same way theists say: "God always existed".

I think you'd have to go back to the beginning of the universe, which I'm not sure actually exists. Good luck with that one.

Apart from religion you should ask this question in the science section. It would deliver you less answers with the G-word in it.

Bottom line: it's all faith based when you break it down. You'll hear arguments of virtual this and that but in the end it is faith based.
