That idea is an expression of the rather cynical attitude that no good deed goes unpunished. People we call "heroes" often experience a great deal of suffering and then die as a result of their heroics. What our pastors and others who would dictate our attitudes and behaviors fail to tell us is that, far more often than not, those on the receiving end of heroic behavior are not in the least bit thankful or contrite, instead acting as if the hero were a sucker instead. Can you imagine a hell wherein you've given your life to save another man's, only to have him sneer at you as he helps himself to your bank account, your real estate, your personal belongings AND your wife? That happens all the time. Sorta makes you think again about the advisability of being a hero, eh?

Since I'm told that many of my personal heroes are likely to end up there, I would have to agree: Hell Is For Heroes.
(You know: Mohandas Gandhi, Mark Twain, Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, among many others.)
Hmm. Would this make a good bumper-sticker, I wonder....

no because there is no hell and two because a TRUE hero would not help others, he would teach them to help themselves!
