my operating system is windows xp media center edition, with service pack 2.

click start, run.
Type msconfig
Click the startup tab.
See if you can find any of the entries that match svchost.exe
remove the checkmark.

I also have windows media center 2005 with service pack 2 but i never get that error ...but i suggest use system restore and go back when your computer was running normal...

try running the following two menus of ccleaner
cleaner > Analyze > Run Cleaner
issues > Scan For Issues > Fix Selected Issues

SVCHOST.EXE is a file needed to use windows. You need to reinstall now or find away to get that file back on.
