They are both narcotic pain relievers. A doctor will sometimes prescribe both after surgery or someone who is suffering from chronic pain.
Oxycontin or (oxycodone hydrochloride) is a controlled relase form of oxycodone. Controlled release means that it is used to relieve pain for 12hours. Hydrocodone (vicodin, lorcet, lortab, etc) pills usually come in combinations with acetaminophen (tylenol) to relieve moderate to severe pain.
A doctor will then prescribe another pain reliever (vicodin, percocet, etc) for breakthrough pain (pain that still "break through" even with the use of the controlled release pill.
These drugs may interact with other medication and be sure to tell your physician what other drugs you are taking, they cause constipation and you may want to discuss with your doctor on taking a stool softner during your use.
I also wanted to add that Oxycontin and Hydrocodone can be highly addictive drugs if not used properly. I dont want to scare you because these drugs can help patients with pain but for any other use they are serious and dangerous if the patient does not follow the doctors specific instructions. Oxycontin is a schedule II controlled substance. Hydrocodone is a schedule III controlled substance. Be careful and make sure to follow your doctors orders!!!

Hydrocodone is hydrocodone. It is usually in pills with tylenol or ibuprofen. It is not as strong as oxycodone. OxyContin is the delayed-release form of oxycodone, which is similar to, but stronger than, synthetic morphine. If these pills are cut or crushed, taking them can be fatal. Have a great weekend!

Different molecular structure. Don't recall the specifics, but one is oxy- and one is hydro- b/c those prefixes signify two different ingredients/components. Yes, they're both opiates, if you're a naive user (physically, as in no real tolerance or experience, I don't mean YOU'RE naive) you won't feel much of a difference in effect between the two. The effects of oxycodone tend to be a little exaggerated in literature and media...it's just percoset. They both show up on a drug test as opiates, a basic five panel can't differentiate between the two.
