What else are you going to do with them? The U.S. Navy grew by orders-of-magnitude during the war and in that 4 years naval technology experienced a massive revolution. After the end of the war not only did the U.S. Navy not need anything like that many ships but a huge number of them were effectively obsolete. So why pay to keep something around that is of no value? That gets very expensive. As it was the Navy maintained many hundreds of WWII built ships well into the 1980's - most of which never put to sea again after 1945. In the case of the DD-638 USS Butler specifically the ship was of the pre-war Gleaves class. While this was the only class of pre-war design destroyers the Navy kept at all after 1945 the majority that survived into the 1950's and 60's did so in the mothball fleet, stored for some possible future contingency. However this was unlikely as after 1945 ships of this class were considered too small and cramped to meet post-war requirements. The Butler was not one of those saved however as she had been heavily damaged in May 1945 by bomb attack and by the time she limped back to the states the war was over and there was a surplus of perfectly good undamaged destroyers. Thus she was stricked and sold for scrap rather than being repaired at great cost only to be left to languish for 20 years in mothballs.

There are no GIRLS on U.S. Navy ships. Many ships have WOMEN (excluding combat ships). The C.O. of the USS Heron MHC-52 (a coastal mine hunter) is a WOMAN, COMMANDER SETH. Women are on board air craft carriers and support ships. There are no BOYS in the military, either. They are MEN, all be it at times YOUNG men. There are teenagers (18, 19 year olds) working on the most dangerous area in the Navy...the flight deck of a carrier. They are responsible for many things: loading/unloading weapons, checking the readiness of planes, prepping a plane for launch, etc, etc, etc.
Other than U.S. Marines, those MEN (and WOMEN) on the flight deck are the most greatly admired military personnel by this old retired Squid.

No there are women on us navy warships. surface ships tend to have the room necessary to operate segregated female sleeping and shower areas. Subs do not have women aboard them as of now but in the future I am sure they will have them as well.

No girls, but there are female Sailors. Not all ships have females, but most do. For example 20% of the USS Ronald Reagan's crew is female.

NO. There are SAILORS on US Naval vessels.
MOST are enlisted and some are officers... Some are male and some are female, but we are ALL Sailors first.
I did the USS Kitty Hawks first WestPac 96-97 with an integrated crew and it went just fine. I flew with several female pilots and dealt with other female-shipmates... all professional.
