Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet.
Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.
The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.
In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

Most people say that both dogs and cats eat it to help food pass through the digestive system or because their tummy hurts and they eat grass so they will throw-up and feel better!

Dogs and cats eat grass because they have an upset stomach. If you've notice, everytime they do this, they spit up slimy grass, therefore getting rid of the cause of their stomach problems.

Might depend on what kind of dog it is. Is it a terrier? My pit bull puppy chews grass, and it certainly isn't for digestion. It's his prey drive. He goes after anything that moves, whether it's my pants leg as I walk by, or leaves swaying in the breeze, or blades of grass that move when he steps on them. He has done a very good job of edging the patio for me.

Dogs do this to throw up, maybe something hasn't settled right or they don't want to feel full. Dogs are more likely to make themselves throw up when they aren't feeling good because they know it makes them feel better, whereas we know it can damage our body parts and can get us a bad reputation, dogs don't know that. Sometimes, though, it is because that was a spot where something was dropped (food, ball with sticky jelly fingerprints, waste from other dogs) and they want to investigate, so they eat it.

The enzymes in the grass
help sooth stomach and
digest the larger roughage
in their intestinal track.
The grass itself is not
really digestible. They often
hack it back up after the
enzymes have been released.
