98% of Turkey's population is Muslim. Turkey is a secular state. People are free in their beliefs. Even under the Ottoman Empire, other religions were honored. Jews escaped from inquisition in Spain and were welcomed by the Sultan in Turkey. You can hear the call for prayer in Istanbul for Islam, Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, and Catholic temples.
By the way, Happy Easter to all the Christians today.

I am a Turk and I was brought up by a Muslim family but like the majority of Turkish Muslims they were not religious...

I haven't been a Muslim since the age of 15 and now I am 28..But it still says religion Muslim in my ID card...(thats why its hard to calculate how many ppl are muslims in the country)

What I am trying to say is we can choose to believe or not to believe.we have the freedom of choice in Turkiye.....

Turkish Muslims usually think religion is between god and the person....I agree with Eras and Mindtrick also with the rest of the friends....

Hope you will be able to see the difference with all of the answers.... just ignore midnight express, he is horrid ;o)

the majority is Muslim but at the same time the majority is not racist as much as other many Muslim or Cristian countries.

the unique Muslim and at the same time the laic country on the world is Turkiye. so in Turkiye you can find places that a church and a synagogue and a mosque side by side; of which tolerance and hospitality doesnt belong to any other middle eastern countries even most european countries.

u can see many racist people here in yahoo answers swearing turkish people, but, u cant see any turkish people here swearing a whole nation; because that is how much the largeness and positivism of turkish people is...
