My boyfriend is American and I am Canadian. We've been told that in order for him to work in Canada he needs to live with me for a year (so we are commonlaw) and then I can sponsor him.

He is a graphic designer who works online. Is it okay for him to make money online still while he is living in Canada?

sounds like a question for a Canadian law specialist. Try to get in contact with someone who understands the laws. They dont want anyone working illegally and Im sure they dont want ppl to starve to death and become homeless while waiting for a year to be sponsored.

Maybe there is a program he can get involved with, like Americans living in Canada or something like that. I remember my mother-in-law coming from Canada to the US and the US required her to have a certain amount of money to keep her out of poverty while awaiting a green card/citizanship/working permission, etc.

You really need to get ahold of some government agencies, ask them lots of questions and have them refer you to different places/websites, etc.

Your boyfriend will need a student visa. YOU are a different thing. There is no visa that will allow you to live in Canada for a year. You would have no chance of qualifying for a work visa as you have no college education or work skills. You may visit in Canada for a total of 6 months in a one year period. No more. You cannot "live" there. And, if the immigration guys get any hint that you intend to Live in Canada, they will bar you from entrance. Were you not aware that to live, work or attend school in any foreign country, that you must qualify for the appropriate visa? Well, you do. You could go to Canada every few months for a few weeks visit, but no employer can hire you and if you overstay your time you will be banned. Your boyfriend needs to talk to the admissions office about his student visa.

Wow, the above answers are a lot of Guesses.
I am a partner at a printing company in Canada, we hire freelance all the time.

If hes making money online is through his design, then just have people pay through paypal, and get a paypal debit card. Why tell anyone for tax reasons. charge a flat rate, no taxes, don't claim it nobody will ever know.

If you are in the GTA PM me I am hiring designers as we speak.

I'm sure there's a way, but it might be a headache to deal with US taxes while living in Canada.
