An "irritated" head shake is different and more energetic than a mild nervous shake. Ear mites are not normally detectable without a smear examined under a microscope. They are barely visible to the naked human eye and are usually fairly deep in the ear canal. You should have her checked by your vet to make sure as mites are parasitic, biting and feeding in your dog's ears and the head shaking, especially in long-eared breeds, can lead to hematomas on the ear tips.

Your dogs problem is with it's inner ear. It could be mites, they require microscopic inspection. It could be an infection, which may be accompanied with an odor. It could be loose wax, head shaking is how a dog removes the loose was. Or, it could be fleas.
Purchase a good canine ear wash and mite cream. Follow the direction and keep the ear clean and dry. Any of the above mentioned problems can be cleared up, and in less than a month.
If, you still have a problem after a month, call your vet. Good luck...

Could be all sorts of things, not even necessarily the ears. But do you clean the ears regularly? They have a natural wax that builds up, and you should keep the ears clean.
You might not see ear mites, unless it was horribly out of control.
Allergies can make them shake their heads...Scratch their ears.
Trauma to the ear, or something lodged in there, grasses or burrs, etc.
Get yourself an Otoscope, look down into the ears. Not only will it help you to see if something's going on, but it will help when you clean the ears to make sure that you have everything.

My mom's dog will shake her head when she has fleas.....you could try some Advantage or other topical flea treatment. I have also seen a dog do the same thing because of a fox-tail in the ear.

You wouldn't see ear mites unless you have a microscope. Just get that dog to the vet for some effective treatment. He must be miserable!

Dogs do NOT commonly get ear mites.they do however get various types of ear infections. Dogs have deep ear canals so evidence of an infection may go unnoticed. Head shaking is often the only sign of an infection brewing..please take your dog to the vet for an exam of her ears.
