Pesto is a mix of chopped up Basil, pine nuts, sometimes parsley, and olive oil. If you buy it be sure to stir well because all of the olive oil will settle on top. Also you do not need a lot for the flavor so use only a few teaspoons! You can use it as sauce for pasta, you can also use it in a cream sauce as well.
It is a great substitute for tomato sauce!

Traditional pesto is a blended mixture of basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan cheese, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Depending on who makes it, it can have other ingredients as well, like lemon zest for instance. It is usually used as a light sauce to dress pasta, but it can also be used as a condiment, a stuffing, a garnish, or a marinade.

It can be either a sauce or a spread. If you toss pasta with pesto, then it's a sauce. If you spread it on a bagel, then it's a spread. It can be considered both depending on how you use it.
