They burned their OWN books in repentance. Rather like an alcoholic or drug addict flushing their addiction. Incidentally, they were repenting of the contents, sorcery mostly.

Because they were books about magic that they had previously owned. Acts 19:19-"..quite a number of these who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them up before everybody..." These newly converted Christians wanted it to be known by all that they had rejected their former course of life in favor of the Christ.

Yes.

Acts 19:19, "Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it 50,000 pieces of silver."

Even though 50,000 pieces of silver would have been a year's wages of 150 men, these new believers didn't hold a garage sale or give their stuff away. They burned it. I encourage all believers, don't sell stuff you know is harmful. Be like these guys and trash it, pour it down the drain. Destroy it.

The surrender of these books marked a real change in allegiance from paganism to Christ. We must be equally willing to surrender whatever is necessary for our Christianity to be real.
