Because Jesus was in the day of a VERY religious community and He had already been prophesized about, with His family line and what things He were to perform already planned out (and those things happened as well), whereas this Messiah would not be the Messiah, because no one has said anything about him. If he really was the Messiah, then it would be Jesus, coming again. Then, it would be the end of the world, and no one would have time to label Him as a religious fanatic or the leader of an evil cult. And also, it didn't work so well with Jesus. He was labeled just that. That's why He was crucified--people didn't believe what He said, and they considered His teaching the highest blasphemy.

Yes.
Jesus didn't claim to be anything but the Messiah (in the sense of being the rightful religious ruler of Israel.
There were many at that time who made the same claim (and may have had the lineage to prove it).
It was Paul that turned it into a religion.
I experienced God directly when I was seventeen. No message, no mission, no special status. I didn't even "deserve" what happened. I had a cat-scan, went to a psychologist who sent me away as having nothing bad and several good effects from the experience (though he offered to talk with me should I decide I needed to)
I've never written a book, hold down a career quite well, a wonderful marraige with a baby daughter, have no group, am not religious, have a strong background in science and formal logic.
Yet, I spent five hours experiencing everything, everywhere, simultaneously.
I don't share it much for reasons you are probably aware of. What I do share transforms the lives of those nearest me; my wife, my daughter, and those of our closest friends who spend time with us to any degree.
I have been pestered to write a book, to start a group. I even have one Yahoo! poster who has been in constant contact. When he asks advice, I share it. Otherwise I am content to experience life.
I never expect anyone to believe me (discourage belief without reason). I know God exists. I don't believe it.
Atheists shouldn't believe me (what proof do I have but some more knowledge and a better understanding of the universe? That's not enough).
Christians and many other religions have their own beliefs and do much to help the world. Why should they?
Others? How could they tell me from every con-man and crazy who claims similar things? How could you?
Hence, my choice. I know there are others who have had such experiences (though I have searched for them fruitlessly). I am not the Messiah, but for someone who has experienced God directly, I would discourage him from ever showing himself.
We aren't mature enough as a species, and we still eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Eden is still here. I live here. But most of man isn't interested or willing to find it, yet.
Pain is a wonderful teacher. Long after I'm gone, God will still be here. They'll be others. They'll share when the time is right. I hope you are around to see it. I will be.

It worked because Jesus proved Himself...yet many didnt believe. that man who just CLAIMED to be the Messiah has nothing to show but his foolishness. Jesus showed He had the authority to forgive.....that He could heal wounds and sicknesses....and that He could do miracles. Jesus wasnt a miracle worker...but He was the Messiah. if a man today claimed to be the Messiah and did miracles...he would be nothing but foolish and a miracle worker and he would lack something.....he doesnt have the authority to forgive sins.....he would lack pretty much everything a person needs to be a messiah....and thats why Jesus is the Messiah. because He has it all.

Try watching the film, the life of Brian!
OK, it is a work of fiction, but it depicts the life of the time.
Everyone was LOOKING for the Messiah, and everyone WANTED to find the Messiah, and everyone WANTED a Messiah!
Jesus happened to be in the right place in the right time!
NO ONE IS LOOKING FOR A MESSIAH NOW!

Okay, obviously you're not a Christian.
If you were, by now I expect you would've learnt that he was considered to be a criminal, by the Authorities of that time.
That's why they crucified him.
The whole "He is the Messiah" thing, I believe, came much later.

You're absolutely right. The reason it worked with Jesus is because is was the Son of God and the Messiah. He proved it everyday he walked the earth. Those who knew Him knew it so. It helps seeing the risen Christ too.

JESUS IS THE MESSIAH!!!! This isn't the time to be asking such a ridiculous question!! you should be ashamed of your self. JESUS was a great man. An innocent man that suffered and died selflessly for you. He loved us that much to give his life for us. And it baffles me that people can be so disrespect full to such a wonderful man.Have some respect for are lord JESUS CHRIST.He did nothing to except give the ultimate sacrifice his life!!!!!!!!

I believe it worked for Jesus because He proved Himself (through fulfilled prophecy, miracles and demonstrated authority over creation) instead of just making claims.

Because Jesus is the only one to have risen from the dead. The Bible says that if Christ had not risen from the dead, we would still be in our sins and our faith would be in vain. It has everything to do with the resurrection.
