Psalms 22:1
..My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?"
Psalms 22:3
"But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel."
That is why God had forsaken Him. Because to a holy God, that sin is abhorrent to, this is a great offense. And as Christ hung on the cross, He was laden with our sins. So in Christ quoting this Psalm, He was revealing that it prophesied of Him and how He would atone for the sins of man against a holy God. These words make manifest the agony and suffering that Christ was under as He is intimately and personally identified with the judgment of God upon man for sin.
His final words were "it is finished" meaning that he had fulfilled the prophesies and that sins were atoned for.

contrary to a lot of the answers thus far, and despite a few mistranslations of the greek text, jesus did not in fact say 'it is finished'.
he said 'it is accomplished'. splitting hairs? perhaps. but, one thing i learnt when studying comparitive religion at university is that when it comes to the translation of religious texts, hairs must be split. the whole meaning can hinge on one word.
contemplate: how much different a meaning can we extract if we translate 'it is finished' instead of 'it is accomplished'?

Depends.
Luke 23:46
And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
John 19:30
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

He said several things, such as giving his mother over to John for care, telling the thief he would be in Paradise, and saying it is finished.

Mark said Me. Luke said spirit. John said finished. Matthew said Me. It is said He cried out with a loud voice, but it is not said what He said.

He said: "I hope nobody will use this experience to make a false religion out of it, and with that start oppressing all sorts of minority groups in my name"

It depends on which book of the Bible you read.
Matt 27:46 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
Mark 15:34 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
Luke 23:46 "Into thy hands I commend my spirit."
John 19:30 "It is finished."
