As I don't know which country you are talking about, I can't comment on that. But I think you'll find there are comparatively more atheists about in R&S tonight because (to put it incredibly simplistically) all the fundies are at church.

Happily YES, I do think there are more atheists today than in years past. I am convinced there are several reasons for this.
Science is finally teaching us to ask questions that seemed silly to even ask in our past. Ex. What outter space looks like, What the Sun is made of, What comets are. These are small things now, but imagine 300 years ago trying to explain to someone all that we know about Astronomy, they'd think you were crazy! Now imagine what we will know in another 300 years :o)
Also there is less pressure to be forced into religion (somewhat). Notice I didn't say NO pressure. Families still place such pressure on children to follow what their parents believe, communities shun some people for having certain beliefs. All in all though, in todays world we have more freedom to say....you're just plain crazy and I don't want to believe in that. This is mostly in the US though, many countries it is much harder.

There are more atheists than before, specifically in the US.
Christian numbers are shrinking by about 1% per year. The majority of those people do not seem to be converting to other religions, but rather, to atheism.

We have multiplied.
We live in an information age. With things like the Internet, information and facts become more accessible. People can make a more informed decision about what to believe or not. And that results in more atheists.

Its because the internet allows global communication and the spread of information.
When we clear out all the dark corners of our ignorance, religion has nowhere to hide.
