Both asteroids and humans are physical entities which resulted from the Universe's actions. A human being makes a "decision" to become a theoretical physicist...Most people would say the decision is an intelligence choice and a result of an independent mind.
An asteroid impacts the earth and kills all dinosaurs. Most people would say the act was a chance act, without intelligence. So that the asteroid did not "choose" to kill the dinosaurs.
What makes human objects special and different from the asteroid?

Adam: Stephen Hawking's hardware is quite complex. Therefore it is human and different from other objects. Special... Can it make truly independent decisions? (such as the decision to beep when the battery is low).

We're no more special than anything in the universe... We only think we are because we are we.

Complexity. Asteroids receive two major "inputs" gravity and solar wind. The response to these effectors is determined by the mass shape and albedo that are not controlled by any internal mechanism.
Humans receive a vast array of sensory inputs which are processed by the brain. The brain uses the information, which exists in a sea of quantum "noise", to make a decision that is then implemented through the use of muscles, a mechanism by which the creature can change it's interaction with the environment.

We are a more complex organism. Take a look at the chemical composition of both. We have evolved to send, receive, and interpret neurological signals.
The only thing that makes us different from an asteroid is how you define different.
We are more complex and function differently than an asteroid. Human is just a word.

Humans have thoughts and desires, asteroids don't. An asteroid doesn't 'want' to hit Earth, and is incapable of changing its course. The human does want to be a physicist, and does have a choice in the matter.

I'm not going to guess. By the way, evolution has nothing to do with the soul and God. Evolution comes from inheritable traits through natural selection. That being said, neither is conceived only made up. "Science Geek: The human mind evolved to believe in God and a soul. Lower primates likely do not have these beliefs, how is evolution the wrong term here?" -you No madam you are wrong. Like I and Science Geek have said, God and soul is not inherited. Quick example for you. -People are not born with Religion, the belief in a soul, Math, writing, reading, science, and time. All of those are learned. This would be correct though. -The human mind evolved, and through it the idea of God and soul was created. It cant be said that the mind evolved to believe in God because the mind can't evolve with ideas, only natural selection.

Both the asteroid and the human have their purposes.
Their "destinies", if you will.
The asteroid and the human do not differ, as I have illustrated.
Their actions are neither chosen, not accidental, they are a part of a greater Logos.

Duh - humans have brains...and fingers, they're quite handy.
If you're going to try and get me to say it's only because people have free will which is God-given, then I ain't gonna.
This is really a very very silly question.
