Well, the main reason they are different is the reason there are always various dialects. Distance tends to allow different branches of a language to drift apart. The actual question you should be asking is why are they so similar after 231 years. The answer to that is that modern communication and transportation has allowed more of an exchange than would normally occur with such great distance.
There have been some changes to be syre, but we can still (mostly) understand each other. American English even has some old features that are no longer in use in Britian, such as the term "Fall" for "Autumn".

Someone could actually write a whole book on this question. However, briefly, English is what is known as a "pluricentric language." Pluricentric languages are languages that have a lot of accent, dialect, or regional variation within them and usually always have.
Other pluricentric languages include Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian, Chinese, Arabic even Swedish and Korean.
So, you will find that English is indeed spoken a little differently in North America than in England, However, likewise, French is spoken a little different in Quebec than France; German a little different in Switzerland and Austria than in Germany and Korean a little different is Seoul than Pyongyang. That's just the nature of pluricentric languages in general.

I think it's the melting-pot effect. America had an influx of people who spoke many tounges. American English is the results of all those tounges learning English as a second language. Eventually they melded into what we have today. Even people in the American south sound just as different as those in the north, and England.

Because, though our languages are based in the same area-we develop as a people and area differently-just like a species-even in America we have different slang and actual language- I'm from So. CA- do you think I could understand the lingo on the NYC subways? NO! Nor could they probably get the street talk in inner LA!-Its been over 200 years- of course things will develop differently, and look at the influx of peoples and cultures we-ve had-the words to those get assimilated of course!

200 or so years ago when they became independent there was no telecommunication. British English continued to change and American English was developping in its own way.
