Yes I do remember when the paper was delivered to the door!! I also remember when gas was pumped for you instead of having to do it yourself (actually, "back in the day" it was forbidden to even touch the gas nozzle, let alone try to pump gas for yourself!!). About the paper thing, sometimes I think they do it on purpose, but probably it's just about being lazy and/or having a really bad aim!

No, but you can call the newspaper and ask them to deliver it to your door. Newspaper deliverers will be annoyed by this, but if you tip them (make sure they know you're tipping them!) they won't mind as much. Some throw it because they have a big route and are trying to get it done on time, others just figure that people are able to walk out and get their paper unless you're in a wheelchair or elderly and with limited mobility, in which case you should notify the circulation department.

I do, it was the early 80's. My friend had a paper route after school and I'd go along to help deliver them. He knew every single house and where the paper had to be left. Sometimes it was in a milk bin outside the door, sometimes it was inside the screen door.
Now it's a mad hunt in the morning to find the danged paper.

My paper still is delivered to the door. When it isn't, I call and request a new paper and/or complain. I live in a smaller city and they have people who drive around and re-deliver wet newspapers.
Call and request that the paper be delivered to your door. Tell them it is difficult for you to go retrieve it out of the gutter. They should oblige.

We actually prefer that he throw it to the side of the house on the driveway since we have desert landscaping and the rocks tear up the newspaper.
And I'm in southern New Mexico. It hardly ever rains here.

To save time and money -- as unfortunate as that is -- that is the way the world works now!
