in terms of range, the M16 has a longer effective range compared to the M4.
M4 is used for urban and close combat situations. But in the open, etc like in the desert or in the forest or beachheads, m-16 is still the best weapon as it has the range and accuracy.
after all. the M4 is modelled after the M16 anyway.
M4 is light weight. but still lacks the range compared to M16. the built is different too. shorter barrel and customisable butt.
price wise. according to Colt, and if i remember correctly, its $800 USD for a M16 without magazine. not really sure on the price.

Everybody saying that the M16 has better range is basically wrong. While the M16 does have a heavier barrel, I've hit silhouettes at 600 meters with a M4 and an ACOG site. The M4 can hit just as far out as the M16, only thing is there is no reason to shoot out that far. The size advantage, plus the fact that the M4 comes with the modular components makes it much better than the M16

First off marines prefer the M-16a4 because of the longer effective range on the weapon. Also many soldiers prefer the M-16 over the m4 because of its more effective range against a point target. Also there is so many of them in service that it would cost butt loads for every solider including the ones that don't need the QQB weapon such as the M4 to be swapped out. Also the entire M16 and M4 family is in the process of being phased out due to its non reliable design etc. A few weapons are being looked out including the XM8, HK carbine and a US made design of the British L85. Hope this answers your question...............Shadow Stalker

The M4 is just a modified M16 and for the most part it already has.

the difference in range is neglible between the M4 and M16. For the most part, non-combat arms carry M16s while combat Soldiers carry M4s with all the bells and whistles on them.

Because the M-4 is a carbine (shorter barrel), where the M-16 is a rifle (longer barrel).

The M4's are not that much good.
They want the Heckler and Koch but the powers that be won't provide them.
