What is the best software and where can I get it?

Good answers but not had the chance to try them yet. Got the addons for celestia and it's around 260mb for those. Thanks to all the suggestions.

I just recommended this to someone else.
it works all over the world, you just set you co-ordinates or nearest city. I downloaded this in Tasmania, and now have it set to London.
(not so much use in London, too much light pollution)

celestia is good but the resolution isn't that great, is there a way of boosting that, maybe a specific add-on.

SkyChart III is a great sky map program for finding constellations, nebulae, planets, etc.
