If it was just one time, save your money and wait to go to the doc until the voices are frequent and/or problematic.
If you have a history of schizophrenia in your family then you may wish to go sooner, but I still wouldn't after just one incident.
Be thankful the voice was seemingly wise and friendly and do what you will with the advice.
I personally believe that God does indeed talk to people everyday. You might be one of the lucky ones to have heard Him.

In roughly February of 2001, I was on my knees, unemployed, crying and praying for God's help, with no idea how I was going to live, because my fiancee had hurt me and I sent him to prison. (He assaulted me so viciously that he hit me THROUGH my own hands over my face and I STILL took 6 stitches under my left eye. He then choked me until the neighbor was able to pry his fingers off my throat. This happened in front of my 3-year old twin girls.) I heard a response from God during the prayer coming from that anguish. When I started praying, I was listening to a hip-hop/rhythm & blues station called 102.7 The Blaze. As I finished praying, the DJ said "And today's Bible verse is I will help you sayeth the Lord." Because of that, I trusted in The Lord when I never had before. Today, 7 years later, I am a college instructor. My daughters are good students and happy, well-adjusted little girls. 1 year ago, I met a man who chooses to reflect God's glory rather than his own personal grudges against the world and we will be married next year. Yes, God talks to His people still today. You just have to believe enough to listen.

Actually, God never stopped "talking" to people; He still does, only we don't "hear".
God communicates in a manner that we can understand and that will not destabilize us. The biblical booming voice for instance may do someone more harm than good if it drives him crazy. So God communicates with us through everything around us: our dreams, nudges and intuitions (as in your case); our family, pets and neighbors; through the TV, radio, and yes, the Internet too. For example, something on radio, TV or Internet may not have anything to do with the problem on your mind. But somehow, it highlights a solution. That is one way God communicates.
When you realize that there is no coincidence, or luck or accident in the worlds of God, you begin to see the hand of God in everything around you, and then find it easier to understand how God communicates with you.
You can always double check whatever you "hear" from God. He will never tell you to do something that will harm someone else for instance.

God does still speak to people. He has spoken to me- not necessarily in words that you hear in a voice but you can sense the words welling up in your heart. He speaks to us as we pray and read His Word. Be careful though that it is the voice of God. When God speaks He will never contradict His Word. In the OT God did audibly speak to people like Moses and Elijah, etc- however after Christ came to earth and died for our sins, He speaks through Him and the Holy Spirit. Remember though good advice can be deceptive- so pray for wisdom and ask God if it was of Him- if you are in Christ, He will reveal that to you-

Yes God still speaks to people. God told the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3, "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit say to the churches." The church is the body of Christ of which we are all members. You have to test the words you hear to ensure that they align with God's word and will. If they do not align then it is not God speaking.

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
The Bible is Gods Word
but as for him actually speaking to you himself i wouldn't think so not in todays world, but i do however know about the holy spirt which is apart of the trinity...
The Holy Spirit . . .
convicts (see John 16:8-11)
illuminates (see John 16:12-15)
teaches (see John 16:12-15)
guides (see Romans 8:14)
assures (see Romans 8:16)
intercedes (see Romans 8:26)
directs (see Acts 20:22)
warns (see Acts 20:23)
God Bless

Yes, he always has. It's not always a voice you can hear with your ears, but He speaks to us in many ways. It's likely that he voice you heard was God speaking to you, but Satan can also try to deceive us. If the voice was telling you something that was Biblical it's a good sign that it was God.

Yes, God still talks to people (believers) through the Holy Spirit. The test of whether or not it was coming from God rather than our own minds is to determine whether or not it follows what Jesus said and or did. If it does, then yes, it was probably from God but if it contradicts what Jesus said or did, then obviously it was not.

A lot of people make a lot of claims of "hearing God's voice". I've never noticed "God's voice" ever saying to any of these folks anything that they didn't like to hear, though.
Isn't it odd that the opinions expressed in "God's voice" to these self-appointed speakers for him coincide perfectly with their personal politics?
I suggest making a doctor's appointment. Especially if that voice tells you to do things.

I've had friends who have clearly had complete conversations with God. I myself have only had a question and answer conversation with God. If its God when you first hear it you will know. Then Satan will try and make you doubt. But just remember what your first thought was when you heard it. Also if its hard to understand its most likely not God.
