How To Measure a Race Track

Before we begin it is useful to know how NASCAR measures a race track. Officially they measure track length from the point 15-feet in from the outside wall. This means that at many tracks the drivers are traveling a shorter distance than advertised (but not by much).

Steve P. is right. They measure 10 feet from the outside wall around the whole track.

They used to measure track distance 10 feet from the outside wall. Don't know if they still do it that way. But Bristol has been listed as 0.533 miles for a long time, so they still might measure it that way.

Track length is measured by the ultimate groove. That is, the fastest path around the track.

I think they figure out the width that they want there track to be I think they build it, and I think that they measure it once they get done with the track.

If you consider gas mileage and tire wear, the outside line. If you consider the inside line both gas mileage and tires suffers greatly. It would make more sense to use the center leaving each team to make their own adjustments.
