I had a similar problem about a year ago when i installed itunes onto my laptop. It was actually the itunes software that "deleted" my cd/dvd drive. The computer i had was a HP Easynote, i think, although i do not know if this is any relevance to you. Try contacting Apple tech support as if it was itunes that deleted your drive and because ipods only work with itunes you'll need a patch or something to stop it deleteing the drive again. By all means save the mp3's to your memory stick but i was under the impression that system restore only removed programs and their related files not documents/music files...i might be wrong though. Back them up on a memory stick or two just to be safe. Hope that helps *edit said disk drive instead of CD/dvd drive

Your best bet is to get a USB hard drive, you can get 250 Gig for ubder £60, You can then use something like Norton Ghost which will create a complete backup of all your files. Then you can do incremental backups regularly which will just back up changed or new files. In a disaster situation you not only have your poerating system but all your work as well. Hope this helps.

My computer may be out of date but relies on files in Windows for the USB to work so while it is possible to load the O.S. to flash memory the computer would not boot from it. Perhaps someone could tell me if more modern computers run USB like the hard drive and CD rom which work before Windows has booted.

All Windows based OS will fit, with the exception of Vista (I personally don't know the size of install Vista), but the rest even XP Pro is only around 3.7-4gb installed. You computer will have to be able to boot from a USB device. If it does then you should have no problem....Thanks

It sounds to me that you would be better off just using Norton's Ghost (or simular) to make an image, just keep the image on the Memory Stick, you would not use as much space too!

Hey yes, there are some people putting linux OS on their memory sticks, DVDs and such, and then using them as spare OS.
