The Spanish and Their Leader, Cortez landed on the shores of Meso-America in February of the year 1519. He proceeded to attempt to "convert" the natives to Catholicism. When they weren't receptive, he started wiping them out and conquering them. The Aztecs, along with the Mayans were soon subjugated and converted to a more "Spanish" culture. This included language and the Catholic religion, which is why Catholicism is the primary Religion of Mexico and Latin America today and also why they speak spanish.

Like most of the answers you have gotten it does have a little to do with Spain conquering Latin (Central) America, but Cortez's was not the only major conqueror there were many more. But the natives didn't adopt the spanish language so easily as one might think they fought to preserve their language and heritage. Which during time they took Spain spanish and mixed it in with their native language and in Mexico their are many different types of spanish spoken with different dialects. And Spain spanish just like others are different so every country that is spanish speaking, their will be either little or major differences between them.

You get the prize for the "duh" question of the day. The Spanish invaders and those who followed reduced indigenous languages to almost nothing. In a few remote areas local language is spoken but not encouraged. The Spanish language of Spain is quite differnt than Mexican Spanish. English is widely spoken through out Mexico.

Spain conquered Mexico and almost immediately began imposing her language, religion, and culture on the natives. This process was hastened by racial mixing of the Spanish and native populations. However, there are still a good number of people in the more remote areas of Mexico who have retained their ancestral language.

Because they are the mixed offspring of Spanish colonists. If they were indigenous people they would speak the languages of the tribes that lived in Mexico for thousands of years.
