Go to IRS.GOV and find your nearest VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Site. They will prepare your federal and state tax return and e-file them for you without cost or obligation. I have been a VITA volunteer for 36 years and am currently doing tax returns for same. You can also go to any public library or post office and get the forms and instructions and do it in paper yourself. With just w-2's it should be a snap.

State tax preparation always comes with a fee as far as I have researched. Federal state tax e-filing is free with Turbo Tax.

There are no income restrictions for free filing at this site. Use the basic (free) version. While doing your taxes the basic version will try to get you to upgrade, but just keep saying no. Using the basic version preparing and e-filing your federal return will be entirely free.

Turns out you can't.
The federal government has agreements in place
with the various large tax preparation organizations
(H&R Block, etc) as well as the companies that
make tax prep software (Turbo tax) to give access
only to their software.
The result is that you have to be using one of their
products to use E-file.

Hi,
Like Ola said...the irs website has links to several free on line services. They will match the best one that suits you. You answer a couple of questions and then it takes to the link. Also I found out that every city has a local IRS office....depending on services they offer, ( which when you find the one in your state and area) you can go in and they have individuals who can help you as well.
