Satan is a real enemy, and spiritual warfare is going on all around us--whether we’re aware of it or not.

Jesus knew Satan is a powerful adversary. He was there when Satan fell like lightning from heaven [Luke 10:18]. And Jesus made it clear that Satan has authority on earth--as both the ruler and prince of this world [John 12:31,14:30, 15:30-31, 16:11].

Jesus experienced Satan personally during His forty days in the wilderness [Matthew 4:1-11]. Matthew tells us the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil, and he describes these real temptations and Satan’s defeat. Jesus knew Satan would come after us as well, so He taught us to pray that our Father would deliver us from the evil one [Matthew 6:13], and He personally prayed for our protection [John 17:11,14].

Many times Jesus warned about Satan’s interference in our lives. In one parable He taught, "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away... The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil." [Matthew 13:24-30, 38-39]

While everyone was sleeping, the enemy came and was never noticed. Just as he’ll come today.

Pray with me now -- Father, sometimes it’s hard to believe Satan is real because we can’t see evil spirits. Open our spiritual eyes, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Lucifer is a Latin name for the planet Venus. The ancient Romans had a story that described the cycles of the planet.

It was quoted in the Bible by an Old Testament prophet who was criticizing a foreign king. Due to misunderstanding of the usage by the prophet, the 'character' of Lucifer was incorporated into the mythology surrounding the Hebrew SET.

The original story is that Venus/Lucifer appears as the Bright Morning Star, announcing the arrival of dawn but attempts to race the Sun to the highest point in the sky. Naturally the Sun triumphs and later Venus/Lucifer is cast down into the night sky as Mephisto. It has no literal meaning other than to describe the cycles of the planet Venus.

It is a children's story.

But believers can make nightmares and hell out of something as harmless as a child's rhyme.

It is real. Lucifer was an archangel of God. It's name is now Satan, and he is one powerful being. His evil is as real as the entity itself, and all you have to do is look around to see the fruits of his work.
If you want something made up to scare children just tell them what Santa Clause does to the naughty children. Apparently the myth is supposed to give a lump of coal to the bad ones or just take the poor kid away never to return the child home.
Originally that was his role besides the rewards to the goody two shoes.
I think the myth is a story perpetrated by Satan's urchins that fell with him, and the fools that blindly follow.

The name Lucifer comes from a mistranslation of Isaiah in which a babylonian king, called Hallel in Hebrew was translated to the latin Lucifer. It became christian doctrine that this was in reference to Satan, but the passage is obviously taken out of context.

Satan (HaSatan in Hebrew) has always been viewed as being an angel in god's employ by the jewish people. He is not a fallen angel nor is he god's enemy.
That is strictly a christian doctrine. He's mentioned once in the Old Testament in Job as being one of the "sons of god" who presented himself before God and the two struck up a bet. Notice in the old testament that there are no "demonic possessions" either, yet the new testament is rife with them.

This comes from the Greeks, who invaded the area now known as Israel in the 400 years between the testament. They imposed their strict views of good versus evil upon the jewish people, and went so far as to rewrite the Jewish scriptures in Greek (there is, to this day, a jewish day of mourning for when the greeks translated their holy writs).
I wish more christians would actually study their history to figure out that satan is not what they think. They'd be a much happier lot.

Lucifer is a metaphor. Science is associated with the devil, and lucifer (lux=light and fer=bring), the bringer of the light of science, is the ultimate evil. "Let my people remain in the dark" was the prevailing mantra.

There is a Satan.
