but then again- it depends on hight, weight, physicall activity etc.

If he is living a healthy life which is what most 12 years olds should be doing, running around, playing soccer being very active then yes it is normal. But if he is sitting at home in front of the computer eating and eating then it is not normal, then he could be making himself sick, but i am sure it is the first part of my answer:))

No, not really. Bodyfat gets used as an energy source during growth spurts. Low bodyfat levels during puberty will probably lead to a reduced adult stature.
Fatten the kid up before puberty, ok!
