I hope everyone realizes i am Catholic and have no issues with talking with atheists. Both questions are getting tiresome but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

lol well I can see your sarcasm was completely lost on the majority.

I think the Why do Catholics eat fish on fridays question should be nominated for the drinking game, in addition to the why are atheists in R&S question, Pascal's wager, and monkeys/evolution questions.

I'm sure you're getting tired of seeing it.. it's old and redundant.

What's the harm in talking to atheists? And why should they not be here? The category is "religion & spirituality," but that does not imply that only "believers," however defined, have any right to ask or answer in this category.

And atheists do believe in something: they believe in materialism. That is every bit as debatable a philosophy as any other. Materialism, at an extreme, says that everything which exists has a material form, that there is nothing which is not covered by the laws of science, and that there is no God. Certainly there are plenty of people who want to debate this, whether monotheists, polytheists, or even agnostics (who argue that there's no way we can know whether there "really" is a God or not).

If we push atheists off this category and into, say, philosophy, aren't we being as rigid as they are? Perhaps even bigoted? It is, after all, what they believe. This category is about belief.

I guess I don't understand all of your question. The Catholics do not eat meat because it is some law that the Church made up. There is nothing in the Bible that says that you can not eat meat on Fridays. I do struggle with all of the laws and rules that the Catholics have made up and told their believers that if you don't do this you are not a Christian, so I always try to show them the truth in a very loving way. You must understand that The Roman Catholic Church got this way by merging Christianity with pagan religions. This is where they got the worship of Mary. The Pagans actually had a woman deity that had a son and to make the pagans accept this easier they merged the two together, not realizing the damage that it really did.

I don't quite follow. But we need to tell the atheists so they know the truth. On judgment day, they can't say "no one ever told me".
I don't know about the Friday fish except that my aunt said not to eat meat on Friday, as the cost was less for fish.

I'm told Catholics eat fish on Fridays, so I follow that bit, but I'm a bit shaky on what that has to do with atheists at all, let alone what the last bit could possibly be referring to. Surely someone as enlightened and tolerant as you couldn't be saying atheists shouldn't be in R&S - or shouldn't we be anywhere at all? That would be a rather immature statement, now wouldn't it?

Now, run along and do your cute little fish thing, I think the grown-ups might want to talk.

Edit: David I know you are Catholic, but I'm not so sure about the "not having a problem talking to atheists bit". If you're going to try and use sarcasm I really suggest working on it a bit more - it needs to be obvious that it is sarcasm, and with this audience that basically means a slap in the face with the fish of your choice.

Why shouldn't we be here?

I've read some very interesting contributions you've made to topics started by atheists here.

It seems to me that you have gained from us as some of us have also gained some insight from some of your level headed answers.

As for eating fish............I was raised a catholic, but I'm allergic to fish. Kinda made things a bit difficult for my mum.

Its an anomaly. They had better eat fish while they can since the oceans are almost empty of the edible kind. I think the great age of the fish is drawing to a close.

this is actually a cop out as they dont consider fish as meat. Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays in respect of Christ not eating meat on Good Friday.

Is this like the country song about the guy whose girl left him, his dog died and his truck was totaled?
