I agree with David M. those of you who say it's a past practice are sort of correct, it was practiced in the past, but not just for Friday's. It used to be that Catholics could not eat meat AT ALL during Lent, and had to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That got changed with Vatican II. Now it's just no meat on Ash Wednesday, All Friday's, and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, but the fasting part is only for those that are of a certain age, those under (I believe) 12 and over 60 do not have to fast.
As for the why of it that was something to do with meat coming from unclean sources.

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

With love in Christ.

My understanding is that this is no longer a requirement for Catholics. I think it was considered to be penance in the old days.
