I'm a college student, female. I find that I can not relate to most of my musician friends. The sex, drugs, constant partying, pressure, all go against who I am as an individual. I have been depressed because of this. Are most musicians cold and and live carefee lives, lack control. I find that I am confused and sad with the environment I am in now. Music is my passion, what can I do?

This is often a dilemma for some musicians. My brother is a musician. It has been his passion for over 15 years. When he moved to a new city, he moved there with his band and also to go to school. Eventually he begam to experience the same problem you are having. He is, for the most part, a very responsible and studious person. He ended up quitting his band to concentrate on his studies. To continue on with his music, he purchased a four track recorder and worked on his music as a solo artist. I don't think ALL musicians are irresponsible and capricious by any means, but I do think that many are. Most of the musicians I know are very intelligent people with a lot of knowledge, but they get too wrapped up in the "scene" they play in. (Most of my friends are musicians). Also there are a lot of them who want to do music as a career and nothing else because they are so passionate about it. If I were you, I would distance myself for your own good. Hang out with them on weekends and try to make other friends at school that are more positive influence on you.

Music is your passion or hobby, you have to stick to it. Since other musicians are partying and doing....etc., etc., You are supposed to do the same. Be yourself what you are. If you are not happy with their company, just leave them. You can always carry on your passion, with other good company. Just stop mingle with them, if it depress you. You spoil your health as well as your music. Good luck.

I would recommend talking to a counselor there at school to see if they can be of some help to you and also follow up with your dr to rule out physical causes such as hormone imbalance that could be causing the depression.
