I don't quite get what went wrong with the dinner, but regardless, tipping is voluntary! If someone tells you that you should tip them, then you should IMMEDIATELY call for the manager and raise hell. If it is a chain restaurant and the manager doesn't satisfy you, then when you get home you should look up the management of that chain restaurant and contact the Divisional Manager, Vice President and even the President of the firm by writing or telephone and tell them what happened.
If those corporate people are not apologetic enough, then you should tell them on the phone that you are now going to the media and talk to every news agency that will listen to you.
You know what, I bet it won't get that far and you will have some satisfaction and the smartass server can be looking for a new job at MacDonald's.

I agree with you that it isn't a duty but I gesture of appreciation to tip.
If someone TELLS me to do something I usually do the opposite anyway.
To be told to tip is just rude. It is common knowledge that tips are not a must but are expected (somewhat). Expected yes, demanded no. Not cool.
These days a hotel will take out a few bucks for room service gratuity. No problem there. If you are unaware of this deduction then you end up tipping them twice. Not quite fair if you are unknowing of this.
There is nothing quite as nice as a wonderful waiter or waitress, bartender, etc... the waitstaff surely can make a break a place.
We get tips where I work. I know I personally appreciate those who appreciate me. If someone chooses not to tip that's okay too. I am sure there is a reason and most likely has nothing to do with me personally.

There are not too many things that could get me to not leave a tip at all, but if the waiter asked me for a tip....
That's an insult to my intelligence, because he is stating the obvious. No, they should not ask for a tip, ever. If it were mandatory, they would have added it to your bill.

I tip no matter what..The size of the tip depends on the service..Some servers haven't had the experience or the proper training and so I can't blame them, but....I again have not been to a restaurant where a server chased me out the door for not tipping, that's scary!

I would think it is not such a nice place after all.
Nope you don't have to tip them at all.
The tip is for good service and I would say that if they are asking for a tip, that is BAD service.
NO TIP !! Well maybe a 37cent tip. LOL

Hell No! my parents had a waiter chase them out the door and stop them...only to ask them why they didn't tip the waiter. My parents said because you sucked. The dude told them never to come back ..... It was all a bunch of crap since when is it mandatory to tip. I think that you should only tip if the waiter is good....My tip to waiters....KEEP MY DRINK FILLED!!!

Its like saying, "donation fee." It doesn't make sense why it should be required, if tipping is supposed to be voluntary, as a praise.
