In NASCAR, the first drive I can remember doing a burnout after a victory was Tim Richmond in Riverside, CA in June of 1982. I remember thinking how cool it was, and it was a road course on top of that. There may have been others before Tim's, but that's the first one I can remember.

No, they do not. Some Fans love the burnouts, some hate the burnouts; and in CAsey Mears case some don't have the fuel for a burnout. Love them or hate them; burnouts are a huge part of NASCAR and what make it unique. To take burnouts out of NASCAR would be like when the NFL took dancing out of the end zone.

I'm not sure who the first to do it was. I do know it was fairly recent. Once in a while, you'd get drivers doing donuts in the grass (Dale Earnhardt after winning the Daytona 500), but as for burnouts.... with-in the last ten years or so, I am pretty sure. Old school guys detest them (Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Mark Martin, etc...)
I do know that the record for the LONGEST burn-out goes to Tony Stewart. When he won at Pocono in 2003, his burnout went the length of the front straightaway (which is the longest straightaway in NASCAR). That is why he typically doesn't do them and climbs the fence again. He has said that when someone breaks his record, he will start doing them again. I have noticed that he does them sometimes, but not after every win.

It wasn't Dale Earnhardt, he did not like burnouts according to Jr in an interview for nascar.com. That's a very good question and I don't think it would be in any stats. How cool would that be to have burnout stats? Longest burnout, most smoke caused by a burnout, loudest burnout , quickest blown tire from a burnout and so on.

That I belive was something started by the younger drivers. I can tell you Alex Zanardi was one of the first to do victory burnouts in the form of doing donuts in Indy Car races, then that kind of made its way over to other forms of motorsports.
