"It's not fair to judge the whole by the actions of a few."

You're absolutely right! That's the whole point of asking this question. I shouldn't be expected to assume that just because SOME cops are good that they ALL are. They need to prove themselves individually to be worthy of the public's trust, because blindly assuming that all cops are good is just as stupid as blindly assuming that they're all bad.

Limp, I'm sorry that you have to deal with yourself every day.

Common- It's not like you were drafted or anything. You CHOSE to be a police officer, so deal with it!

"It is simpler to assume any Officer you meet is a good one, rather than the other way around."

Simpler, maybe, but police who want my trust and respect need to earn it individually instead of expecting me to blindly assume that they're all good cops when I know better.

Some guys go into police work to hide behind the authority of the law, in order to attempt to get the respect they can't get otherwise.

Kind of a negative guy to be a supposed "soldier of christ". I think God would teach you to love and to have a open heart and not just assume everyone is bad until proved otherwise.

My interactions with the public more often that not consists of 80% order maintenance...that is the traffic accident, barking dog, problem with your neighbor or false alarm.

These contacts that we have with the general public are usually less than 15 minutes...and that's stretching it. If I can spend more time helping someone out I try. I can be limited by staffing, how busy it is that night, how much I can really help and by other issues.

The point is I show up...I talk to you, figure what the deal is and either I can help or I can't. Chances are it will be the last time I ever deal with you. Even if it's in a somewhat negative way like a traffic violation. I pull you over. Either you get a ticket or you don't. Maybe you get a lecture or maybe you don't. It depends on how many times I have had to do the same thing or how bad the situation is.

I don't have to earn your respect. Nor will I ever try. I work on being professional and doing my job. I focus on what I can control.

Maybe you are aware that no matter how hard a cop might work at "earning" respect from the public there are parts of a community that will never respect a police officer because we threaten a preferred lifestyle. A lifestyle of hurting other people and breaking the law whenever it suits them.

i'm not answering this question out of anger. I chose to be a cop...just like you said. I have done a lot of other things in my life and this by far is the job that makes me feel like I actually make a differnce.

I answered this question as a Christian. It is not your place to judge. Let things go and don't be swallowed up by bitterness and distrust.

They HAVE earned it. They decided to become a Public Servant and go through tough and demanding training. They place themselves between the public and the goblins that prey on them, risking their lives for far too little money. And, apparently, all without the respect of those they protect.

They have chosen to protect you, and you have chosen to judge them before the fact.

Do the math, at the very least. The vast majority of Officers out there are good people trying to do a difficult and dangerous job, while a few unscrupulous Officers disgrace their profession. This means it is simpler to assume any Officer you meet is a good one, rather than the other way around.

First off, who said police want or need your respect? They don't need to earn your respect, because you are a citizen and they inforce the law, there's no respect involved. It's black and white, don't act like an idiot or break a law and you won't have to deal with a cop ever, and vice versa.

Police do not need anything from us, other than not giving them probably cause. They could care less whether we respect them or not. Why don't you walk up to one and ask him/her face to face this question. I think you'll get a very quick answer, lol. Too bad it's not the '60s again, I'd like to see that cop bust your teeth out, LOL!

It's not fair to judge the whole by the actions of a few. There are bad apples in every field, we are just picked on more than others because some people find our job interesting and exciting.

Because there are people out there - yourself, for example - who would rather assume that all cops are bad until they prove themselves otherwise. You must give respect to get respect, and if cops are not treating you with respect, perhaps it is because YOU have not earned THEIR respect.

They should'nt have to earn it. They are on the streets protecting you, that's pretty respectable in my book. I know not all police officers are good, and some of them do pretty bad things. Don't let the very few bad officers make you think they are all bad.

Your yahoo name is... soldier of Christ 777... That is funny because I work for God. You see Satan runs the world. Evil is everywhere. I go out everyday and try to stop it. Do I stop it? No, but I try. I try my booty off... I don't need respect from people. I respect myself. I respect the job that I do. People do not have to like me. Do they? I would say most do. Even the ones I arrest I usually get a laugh or a smile out of. Like I said though... If I go out and fight evil just a little, that is enough for me. You can hate me, but remember soldier of Christ 777, they hated Jesus more. I know that I can not save as many as he, I will never be loved like he, and I will never be hated like he. I will however go out and stand with him in the fight against evil. I will fight physically and spiritually.

Why don't you go deal with every inbred, split-toothed freak on the streets each and every day and see if it opens your eyes to what society really consists of. Then you might have a clue as to what you're talking about. As it is, clearly you don't.

Ok!!!!now first of all they do deserve respect, it is not good to insult or
condemn the majority of Police officers out there for the few who are
not doing their jobs properly are corrupt or whatever, if someone makes
a mistake you cannot then not respect the others...As for the individual
respect thing....they are members of a Policeforce, if they come out in
uniform they are not demanding it, but you can treat them decently or
be arrested....In their personal capacities they have lives as well, and
they can be respected for who they are, in uniform they need to be both
respected for who they are as well as what they do, because they are
out there for you....................................................................................................
