Hi, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (that's the actual name of the church, "Mormon is just a nickname).

I think a great resource that goes over our most basic beliefs is this page from the official church website: http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-1,00.html

Of course the reasons to become a member can be different for everyone, but ultimately it should come down to a person doing their own studying, and praying to God with an open heart to know if it's true or not. It's a very personal experience and process, that no one can or should do for you.

Aside from perusing that website, a big thing to look through of course would be The Book of Mormon which we believe is a companion to the Bible (another testament of Jesus Christ) - a record of God's dealings with His people in ancient mezo-America. You can get a free copy through here: http://www.mormon.org/freeoffers/0,17785,2071-1-1,00.html or by calling, 1-888-573-7111. They will likely ask you if you would like to have the missionaries personally deliver the book, which would be a good idea as they can help teach you the basic beliefs, and answer any questions you may come up with along the way.

Best wishes

That is a lot to ask. but what I can add in addition to going to www.mormon.org is to tell you do do the same thing Joseph Smith did. Follow the council given in James 1:5-6

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

The reason I tell you to do that is because it is God that we are trying to follow. And I can give you any number of reasons why I think it would be a good idea to become a Mormon and I can guarantee you that there will be someone else who could give you an equal number of reasons not to, but if God tells you that it is a good idea I don't think anyone could come up with a reason to counter that effectively.

I am, ultimately, a member of the LDS church because I believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God, like the Bible; that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God: and that the LDS church is the most Biblical.

Besides the Holy Ghost bore witness to me about it.

I'm a Mormon Missionary. My work for two years is that I leave my family and teach people about Our Faith. If you would like we could meet over Skype or Facebook and talk?

If you are serious to know what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe in, consider doing the following:
1- Go to Mormon.org and look up basic beliefs
2- Read the King James Version of the Bible and the Book of Mormon
3- Read James 1:5-6. Do as directed.

Being a Mormon myself, I can easily say that the reason why we choose our faith is because we know it to be true. While this itself seems like an overly simple answer, you'd be surprised.

For example, when I tell folks that I am Mormon and therefore adhere to more stringent types of living, people may be in shock, but it isn't that. This faith, as all others in the world, is about standing for what you yourself know to be true. We do what we do because we know that it leads to cleaner living (no drinking and smoking because they lead to worse things, no premarital sex because it leads to troubles) and because it ultimately helps out our well-being and souls.

All of this is what I myself have seen.
If you want evidence, then I suggest a look at lds.org.

Apart from info. on the church itself, it also provides a substantial number of handy little beliefs, that can apply in your life.

You are the perfect candidate for mormonism - not wanting to hear anything but what they say. As for the doctrine, Gordon Hinckley is on record as stating "I don't know that we teach that". The doctrine keeps changing, the canon is revised, and the history of the early church is concealed. Just keep on saying "I know these things to be true", but don't be surprised when you find out they aren't.

To add any more to the positive replies given thus far would be redundant. Therefore, I bear testimony that this Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the true restored church upon this earth and through the inspiration of the Prophet Joseph Smith, we have received another testament of Jesus Christ in the form of the Book of Mormon.

We have also received direct revelation from God to Joseph Smith and other subsequent prophets that helps us further to understand the Lord's commandments, wishes, and of His kingdom.

I know all of this is true because I have prayed over it and the Holy Ghost has witnessed the truth to me line upon line, precept upon precept, until I have grown spiritually prepared for witnessing of the Lord Himself.

The priesthood that I hold is the true authority to act in God's name and it has blessed me, my family, and countless others of whom I have blessed using that authority.

If you would only follow Moroni's promise as shown in Moroni 10: 3-5 of the Book of Mormon (page 529) you too will receive that special witness that I and millions of others have.

Upon doing that your house will be blessed and you will feel the glory of the Lord upon you.

I so testify in the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

If you were a 2 year old, you would probably sing this primary song, which teaches some basic precepts of testimony, faith, and the Holy Ghost.

I know my Father Lives
And loves me too
The Spirit whispers this to me
And tells me that it's true

He sent me here to Earth
By faith to live His plan
The Spirit whispers this to me
And tells me that I can.
