I have a full set of Definitive Technology speakers and they're amazing. But remember that a good portion of the sound quality coming from the speaker depends on the amplifier/receiver that is running them. And dont always judge just based on sheer wattage output. For example, Harmon Kardon receivers tend to have less wattage driving the speakers, but the signal processing and clarity is superior to other brands with higher wattage.
If you buy higher end speakers i would recommend making sure you have an appropriate higher end source driving them. I have a Yamaha VX-R2700 personally, and its amazing. I just upgraded from a decent Sony receiver that was 7 years old or so, and the difference was unreal.
Its a decent investment to build a quality home theater, and you want to make sure you have complimentary parts. Do your research before you buy, go to audio stores and listen. Best Buy has Magnolia Home Theater sections in some of their store. They arent the best on price, but they're very easy to go to and listen to an array of brands and levels of quality. They have alot of the mainstream mid to high end brands and items. Places like Myer-Emco or Tweeter, if you have those where you live, have some of the same things, but also have some of the higher end items that you can check out as well.
If you want to spend more than $50,000 or so, there are very top end audiophile quality items, like this pair of speakers for $32k, http://www.silverlineaudio.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=41
or this pre-amp and amp combo from Krell that retails for $80,000 for the pair.

Things like these are available at exclusive boutique type audio stores. Those are usually only in major cities obviously. Checking the makers websites for dealer listings is the easiest way to find one. You could easily spend several hundred thousand if you have the budget!
anyway, Good luck!
