I'm using a Pentium III at 500 MHz, 192 Mb RAM, and a Matrox G200 graphics card(8 Mb), currently on XP SP2. What operating system should I have, provided that I'll use this computer for gaming and web surfing purposes?

XP should be choppy on that computer. It looks like it's suited for either Windows 2000 or 98. The whole idea of "gaming" on that computer is ENTIRELY overlooked. There is no way of possibly playing recent game titles smoothly (and some won't even let you install them). You probably can play simple games like Windows Solitaire or old games like StarCraft fine, but beyond that, consider a major computer upgrade.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's taking you like 15 seconds to load Yahoo! Answers (in comparison, this computer I'm using takes 0.4 seconds, lol).

XP is a little heavy to run based on your specs. Xp takes plenty of resources so you need to have a decent specs to run XP smoothly. My first PC was AMD Duron 800 Mhz,128 DDR SDRAM, 8 MB Nvidia vanta (that's a piece of ****). The original OS that came with system was Windows Me (the shittiest of all windows). I tried running XP on that machine, and it would lag.

I suggest for you run Windows 98 SE. It's the third most stable windows OS so far (Win2000 was first, then XP on second). Win 98 SE also use very little resource compare to the other 2. win2000 is pretty good too on older machine like yours. It doesn't demand as much system resources than XP, but it still have some XP capabilities and features (not all). The only downside of win2000 is that the system interface is not as intuitive and easy to use as XP.

If you want to explore the other side, you can try linux. some linux distro are very efficient in using system resources. And others are more easier to use. If you never use a linux, of a beginner with linux, I suggest you go with Ubuntu or Mandrake linux. They are very easy to use compare to other type like red hat or debian. Also, if you have slower machine, ubuntu is better to use.

I hope this will help you in choosing your OS. I know that XP is a good system, but it takes quite a bit of horse power from your system to keep it running smoothly. So, if you looking for alternative OS, i say try Win 98/2000 or Ubuntu linux

You need major upgrade as a primary PC for gaming. As it is now XP is not the right OS to be on that kind of machine, and best bet is to run Win 98se, for such spec, maybe the best game that you can run is Quake 2 on that, if you want to experiment with Linux, go for small Live CD distros using not a full desktop but simpler less taxing GUIs that have the advantage of speed and not touching HD.

I have 13 computers that are P-III 450 or 500 mhz. I have XP Pro on 1 XP home on 1 and W2k on the rest. I mush rather W2k Pro. It is very stable and runs on much less resources. If you have XP I would stay with that and instead of spending money on W2k (About $120 the going price) I would jump my RAM to 512MB (about $40 per 256MB stick), buy a slot 1 powerleap 1.0 to 1.4Ghz upgrade adapter. It is plug and play and works great.
With those two upgrades you go from a P-III 500 barely running XP to a 1Ghz+ computer that will cruise right along.
You may even be able to save some money by putting two 128MB modules and one 256MB RAM module.

ubuntu cant play most modern games beacuse they dont have linux binaries. Its hard to find games that will run on linux. Your best bet in my opinion would be upgrade your computer, then get Windows XP.

Isn't it run very slow ??? You should increase your RAM, or you just go back and use windows 98 if you want your computer run faster.
