In the digital world, it's called blending.
for example if you want to merge a dark night sky photograph with a full moon so that you have an image that reads as a whole. Or, you might want to position a flower in an ethereal way over a landscape. The possibilities are endless. In the art world, if you cut and paste images the old fashioned way with scissors and glue, it's called montage or collage.

Are you talking about a double exposure or when you divide a picture like in wedding photos, they will put a picture of the outside of the chapel and then the inside with the couple at the altar? I'm not sure of what the technical name for that is.

When i was in school, we use to create these fans, by folding the paper to create an accordian type fan. Then, we'd take two different pictures, cut them into strips and paste one picture on all the folds facing one way and the other picture on the folds facing the other way. this way, when you turned the 'fan' left or right you'd see a different image.
Not sure what this was called though.
