Consumer Reports recommends the Pro Form 700S as a best buy for the money and will cost you about $500. Unfortunately, there aren't any that are recommended under $500 due to safety issues. Maybe you can look at purchasing a used one rather than a new one.

Things to look for:
stride length (some are small which won't work for a normal height person)
adjustable incline
get one with arm motion (handles that move so they are being exercised also)
noise level (you probably won't like something really noisy)
adjustable resistance so you continue to get a workout when the current level becomes too easy
safety features
a good warranty

Before buying, also visit several retailers and try the equipment for at least 10 minutes. It will tell you if you prefer one brand over another. Then you can keep a list of the ones you particularly liked and keep an eye out for a sale or a chance to purchase one used.
