Your asking for a open minded response in a closed minded world. People on this board belive what they believe . They dont come here to have their minds changed , but somehow have this vain notion that they may change others minds. And Im sure that you would be a prime candidate for some to change to their way of thinking .

1) The Pope quoted a persons writings form at least four hundred years ago who was taking about the violence and murder of Muslims, I believe you call it the "Religion of Peace". This trend seems to be continuing....
A lot of what is happening now is Sunnis and Shia killing each other in Iraq. The Americans are the ones in the middle trying to stop the militants of these groups from killing innocent people, I believe these militants are the true terrorists. Most people in the West believe that most Muslims are not militant and basically want peace.
By the way, when Iraq was invaded Saddam opened the prisons and let some very bad criminals loose. There are several instances where American troops were called to homes to find some of these men raping women for days at a time, these included ten and eleven year old girls. (This was at a time when these troops were ambushed and lead to homes just to be attacked, but they went and arrested men and turned them over to the Iraq courts.) Since you have not noticed, several American troops have been prosecuted and have been sentenced to long jail terms for crimes they have committed. I won't tell you that abuse of women never happened, but I do not believe, and the papers have not reported that it happened very often. You may not realize that the MAJORITY of the Western press is against this war and in particular President Bush! If there are things that are done wrong they report on it for days and try in every way possible to make Bush look bad. If these crimes were committed the press would do there best to throw it in the President's face, but this simply has not happened.
Saddam's troops raped hundreds of women in Kuwait when it was invaded, it appears rape was a policy of the military. It is also very clear that the older son of Saddam had rape and torture rooms, and had his men pick up girls twelve and under from school for him to rape. This is fairly well documented.
I think you need to increase the number and types of sources of your information. The Arab press appears to publish some very , very misleading information on these and other issues. I won't begin to say that the western press is fair but I think they don't seem skew these facts quite as much.

Pope Benedict was quoting from a written work at a college he was speaking at. It was true and made sense in the total speech. I do not think that U.S. troops "raped hundreds of women and little girls". Our troops are better trained than that. Not that something might not happen when one of them is on his own, but this would not happen as part of the military operation. I do not support Bush or his policy. It was stupid to go into Iraq when the person who harmed us was somewhere else. Please do not link Bush and the Pope together. The Pope is a good and holy man. He spoke the truth. If you can not take the truth about the history of Islam, that is your problem, not his.

The pope sees himself as Vicar of Christ...and christ on earth as well as many things..that is in their own writings. The change whatever they want of what God says....I would suggest people ignore the pope..he will be dealt with the same as the rest of us on judgement day.
"you are terrorism itself"..I would prefer to think you are upset and angry that so many innocent people are being killed and that you are lashing out in pain to those who have killed innocent people..and i prefer to not believe that you are calling people like me and so many others terrorists that do not believe in killing innocent people etc and are not invoilved in the atrocities of war.
My God says that we must forgive our enemies..unforgiveness makes us ill and eats away at us and it causes anger and causes people to sin and lose all hope of going home to heaven.
Even Jesus on the cross spoke of those who horrifically treated him and killed him.."FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO"!..
and that is the crux of it ...governements and those who are doing bombings to cause retaliation etc, have no idea what they are causing and doing..they are all causing a domino effect of violence, killing..dragging the innocent into it etc..it takes everyone to stop all of this...
Those who blew up the twin towers should never have done that and killed the thousands of innocent people just because they hated what the government was doing..they let their anger get the better of them and just caused more harm..they could have protested to the government and used political power to get the government back..and then, going over and killing people to stop another attack was just plain wrong, causing so many more innocents to be killed.
all of it a lack of respect.
It takes us all to put a stop to this hatred and live side by side respecting one another....and in this world of anger, hatred and destruction..I will not be a party to any of this hatred.
God Bless.

Yes, the Pope quoting statements from another person who said that Islam was violent is so offensive.
One wonders why the Muslims didn't just start suicide bombing the vatican at that very moment... the audacity to quote someone who called Muslims violent, what was he thinking?!
The Crusades were a defensive war against Musilm jihad. Islam was started by Mohammed warring and plundering and it was spread the same way.
Learn some history before you start spouting propaganda...

it still seems strange to me that immediately after pointing the finger at someone else, the pointer goes and does that very thing. You call the pope a liar and Christians the violent ones in order to convince yourself that you are not a liar and violent one. You will be judged as you judge others.

The pope is NOT God. He is a man - a SINNER - just like everyone. He has said some very stupid things. Don't judge Christianity by what a pope has done.

A straight answer to your question - and ignoring the rhetoric that follows, which is very questionable.
The pope did it because someone had to.
Islam is evil.
