from what i understand, ANY kind of shampoo will cause build up after time. You are sposed to switch shampoos every 6 months or so. Suave is about one of the cheapest shampoos out there so any salon product might seem so much better than that.
I use herbal essences shamp & cond becuz its proven to be *excellent* for me in both cleaning & conditioning and its relatively inexpensive compared. but i have splurged before on some salon/professional shampoo and conditioners and saw no improvements, i switched back to H.E. and still have the expensive stuff sitting in my bathroom cabinet.
generally speaking however, certain brands are just way better than others. suave is low on the list.

There isnt any truth in general to the salon stuff being better. Some of the things sold in salons are overpriced and can be found in many beauty supply stores or something similar can be. I know people that swear by Suave (esp Milk and Honey) which is cheap and others that swear by the more expensive brands such as Nexxus, Friedman, etc. It's important to find out what works for your hair. Suave may have caused build up in your hair but I think they have a clarifying shampoo which is necessary anyway after all the products people put in their hair on a daily basis.

MOST Shampoos (Not ALL) Contain Pretty Much The Same Ingredients. As For WAX, There Is No Wax In Shampoos Or Conditioners. There ARE Ingredients That Will "Build-Up" ESPECIALLY, "SILICONES" (Amodimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Etc.) Salon Products, Which WERE Top Quality (Pre 1990) Have Become Just "Cheap Commerical JUNK" Just There To Sell To The Masses At An OBSCENE Profit.

When I was living at home, my mom always bought White Rain shampoo which costs about a dollar at the store. I always hated it because I wanted to use some of the more expensive stuff. Well now that I'm on my own I've been trying other shampoos and I always go back to the White Rain. I think the stuff you can buy in the salon is probably pretty good, but I think as long as you like how your hair looks and feels then the brand of shampoo doesn't matter. And besides, I always thought of going to salon to get my haircut as being a treat for my hair because you get to use really good products that I otherwise wouldn't use on a regular basis!

Try biolage hydratherepie or sleek look by matrix (they're both by matrix). I've actually tried a number of store shampoos and some work pretty ok, but I have never had my hair feel better then when I have used biolage or sleek look. BUT I think it may depend on your hair. I've seen some people who can use whatever store brand shampoo and their hair feels good. But mine is kind of thin I guess, so these ones work really well for me. Why not give Biolage hydratherepie ultra conditioning balm. That stuff rocks, give it a try.
If you still want to use suave I would use a clarifying/stripping shampoo once a week to strip off that oily build up. I actually use suave clarifying shampoo once a month (since I use a dye my hair, don't want to strip the oils too often). I honestly believe it all depends on your hair type, like I've said I've seen people who use less expensive shampoos and conditioners and their hair looks fine. BUT, I remember when I used every brand in the store (I swear), and now that I use sleek look or biolage, I really do notice a difference. I think it just depends on your hair type. My bf actually used my shampoo and conditioner once and kept telling me how soft his hair felt right after. He always loves to run his fingers through my hair and tells me how smooth and pretty it is :P
Good luck!

The quality of brands like Suave, VO5, White Rain, etc are pretty poor (at least in my experience) to salon quality brands. I have heard that Suave especially can cause build up on your hair, but I hear that any shampoo that is not clear can cause build up. I say, whatever works for you is good. Don't worry about price or brand, just use what you like and what you think makes your hair look good... that's what counts after all!

i would put a bottle of suave in my purse-or at least the ingredients and go back to the same place, preferably the same person who cut your hair before. see if it happens again. then compair shampoo ingredients. just be aware that wax has a few different names. compare them infront of her. more than likely you will set the expensive stuff down and walk out-most hair products do contain wax. they almost always carry the ingredient: alcohol (this too is under different names).
if suave works and you like it, then by all means use it. i personally like suave. humectus (the blue and white bottle)
the last expensive shampoo and conditioner i've used was 5.99-on sale and it just soaked in my hair with very little lather. i felt as tho it was totally stripping my hair. back to suave.
what i really would enjoy is cream rinse-not conditioner. cream rinse seemed to keep my hair from frizzing.
i woud also like to point out that many salons use a water softener-if you have ever bought the products they are selling or used in your hair to wash it with and tried it at home-it is much different than the salon.....unless that is you have a water softener.

lots of hair products cause buildup including the salon brands. hair stylists get perks from selling products, so don't be shocked that she would say that. certain products are formulated to prevent buildup (like aussie mega) and they say so right on the package. but you can use whatever you want and just use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while. i like neutrogena "anti-residue" and "clean replenishing." these are great products and a low price.
on another note, i have naturally curly hair, so i need a shampoo and conditioner that nourish my hair. suave just doesn't do it for me, but aussie is great and inexpensive. suave is ineffective for me: i have to use three times as much than with aussie with much poorer results, so the super low price tag is hardly worth it. many salon products are better than the other brands, but not so great to justify the price for me. $20-$40 is just ridiculous. so i choose aussie (moist or mega), and for less than $6 for 32 oz of shampoo, i get a bottle that lasts over six months for my (long-haired) fiance and me. totally worth the few extra bucks.

Point of interest: The Horticulture Department at Purdue University uses Suave brand Daily Clairfying Shampoo to prepare plant tissues for viewing with a microscope. The reason is it is THE best at removing oils....period. Surprisingly, it was followed by Johnson's Baby Shampoo. Who would have guessed? Not me.

There are some differences but nothing as major as they want you to believe. Suave is one of the best inexpensive hair products so you're fine using it. Once in a while use some baby shampoo to clean out any possible buildup.
