Im curious, i mean a suntan will fade as dead skin cells are washed off and replaced as will a scab or permanent marker. So how does a tatoo stay put? And why do they go discouloured and muddled as the years wear on?

(I have one and i dont know these things! Lol!)

The explanation is simple. The top layer of skin is called the epidermis. A Moment of Science explains that while the epidermis is always regenerating, a tattoo needle actually penetrates through to the dermis, the second level of skin. It's here that the tattoo makes its home for the rest of your natural life.

As for discoloration and muddled look - the color does eventually fade and at a certain point in life, frankly, everything just sags. Including the dermis. That sagging causes the tattoo to get that muddled look.

Your skin is made of loads of layers - the most superficial layer is more prone to damage so it repairs and regenerates the most whereas the deeper layers don't so much. Thats why if you injure yourself, a superficial scratch heals without a scar whereas a deeper cut will scar. The deeper the cut, the longer the scar takes to heal. Tattoos act the same way as the deeper cells are stained with the ink where the cells don't regenerate as much. So a tattoo will fade, but as they are the deeper layers of skin, they fade really really slowly. If you look, older people have lighter tattoos than people who have had them done more recently.

well you kinda sorta answered your own question. after years and years, the tattoo fades or wears out a little bit because of your skin shedding. however, it does not completely come off because the tattoo is ingrained deep into your skin so much that it'll last long enough until the day you die. i.e. unless you live 200 years, it'll be with you forever.

There are certain marks on the skin, including tattoo, which remain undisturbed despite the normal physical changes that take place as part of one's growth!

it is only the very top layers of skin that is replaced. the ink is in the lower layers. It doesn't actually fade, like something that sits out in the sun. some of it is assimilated bby the body.

well, thank GOD i was smart and got my tat put on my ankle. lol...no droopy moddled looking tats for this gal! lol

well, you've got some pretty good answers.

there is however a few things to look into that if you decide you want one, but not sure if you want it permanently is either "glow in the dark" ink or fading ink....either one is a very cool way, but usually are more expensive.
