My daughter (15) would like to try this with our Boxer. We know that we would need to go to a trainer, etc. But would it be a waste of money? (not the obedience part). & just for something fun for her & the dog to do.

I understand it's not about the breed, but when you watch the shows you usually see that the Border Collies & Shelties are the 2 Breeds that do the best. Wow they are fast and limber!! I was just curious about how well a Boxer would compete knowing what the competion looked like.

Both obedience & agility are sports where the "titles" (the right to put letters after the name) are awarded not by winning the class but by acheving a certain level of preformance. Therefore sucess in a VERY real level can be acheived by nearly any willing & fit dog with a determined trainer. Beginners start in a different class from the experienced dogs & handlers and so there is an increased chance of a blue ribbon or a trophy ot two along the way too. If you look around, frequently in obedience especally there are show offering a prize for top boxer, top Jr handler ect. There have been enough "suprize" breeds win even on the national tornament level that even that can not be totally ruled out simply by breed of dog or handler age. A 16 yr old in my agility club made the national finals with a flatcoat retriever - a decidedly nontraditional breed.

Boxers do just as well as any other dog. Agility shows are not about breed, but about training, skill and love. Your dog has to love and trust you to accept the training completely and obey commands in the field where it will be noisy at times and filled with other dogs on the sidelines. We've competed against boxers that did excellently. The breed isn't the important factor. The time you are willing to put into the training and how much fun you both have with it are important. As long as you both "play" regularly and love the game, you won't have a problem.

just be aware that the bulk of the boxer's body is his chest portion; they already can have hip problems and their legs are very thin in comparison; they are very smart animals just not sure that their legs and hips can take that repeated abuse on them; they are not built for jumping , running through tunnels and their bodies are not made for that; the people that I know that run with their boxers have had to take them in for back leg tendon surgery; take a look at the legs of dog and you will see what I mean ; to do this over and over repetitiously , I feel will do more harm than fun; you don't see a lot of boxers in these contests for this reason; the body should suit the sport; you can't be a 4 foot basketball player on professional basketball team etc etc

Boxers are just as good as any other dog. I don't think that training would be a waste of money if at all times you stuck to the training program.

Boxers tend to outperform their counterparts in the agility department while briefs tend to induce a bit more obidence.

I would never subject my underwear to that kind of treatment.
