Hi... I'm an african-american male, actually I was born in Canberra, australia so I guess that makes me afican-american/australian, anyway I moved to the States when I was about 3yr old. I have offered an oportunity to live in and work in sydney, aus..and I was just wondering how will things there be for a guy like me living there. I have read couple of questions from this site and I have been getting mix results. I've loved australia ever since i was young and wanna know how live is compared to here in the states. I have discovered few things so far... the weather is similar to florida, there are water restrictions, anything else i need to know? any info. will be helpful.

Thanks

Of course they get love down here!!
The only thing that might get in your way is if you've lost any aussie humour you had and turned into a loud, obnoxious american. Be easy going, carefree and laid back like us and you'll be fine!! Make sure you're not over the top, loud and pushy as we don't really like that down under.
You'll find most people don't care what you look like, we care what you are like on the inside - whether or not you're a good bloke is more important than what colour you happen to be.

Depends if they are lovable or not. I shared a flat/apartment with an African from Tanzania and he had a few girlfriends, one of them was a tall good looking blonde and as smart as they come. He was a nice bloke which goes a long way. That was in a middling sized country town - 50,000 people, a lot of them not so smart. I would not call all of them 'crackers' but if they were in the USA some of them would be.

I work in the same building with two African men, one from Ghana and the other from Ethiopia, both of them married to local (white) ladies.

There is racism in Australia but it never reached the kind of hysteria that seems to have been the case in the USA. You might get trouble from the stupid, immature and aggressive, other smarter people will not bother you.

Racism is everywhere in the world so you will get some of that here in Australia as well. But - just like everywhere else, they are a minority. Just ignore them. No one here like them anyway.

Australian don't care where you come from. Treat others the way you want to be treated and you will get on with anyone. Just take note of our sarcastic sense of humour. Sometimes the way we say things may sound like we are insulting you but in fact it is a way of saying "we like you well enough that we can insult you knowing that you will not take offense"

There will be some culture shock after you arrived here but this will pass.

Once you start eating meat pies (with sauce, of course) and drink beer at a footy game with a few friends, nobody will ever notice what skin colour you have. They will be more concerned what colour you got on.

The beer is cold, the barbie is on, and the sausages are ready. Where the bloody hell are ya?

Hi there!! I live in Queensland, Australia and I reckon Australia is one of the best countries you could possibly live in. If I were you, I would definitely take that job! I will admit, however, that there can be some pathetic people around (racist) but they usually tend to be way too pathetic to come up to your face and say anything. So, what you don't know - can't hurt you. Generally people are really friendly and will accept people for who they are. Australia is a VERY multicultural country and personally - I welcome all people. Particularly the sexy Black ones! You guys have the most gorgeous skin - like chocolate - yum!!! But when it comes down to it - I think that you just have to make the right decision for you. Is this job a great opportunity for you? Will coming to Australia give you even greater job prospects? Do you want to live in beautiful Down Under? If your answers were YES YES YES....then pack your bags and come on down brother! It would be great to have you!...YOUR WELCOME.

Much Peace, Love and Happiness :)

I live in New Zealand (traditional rivals of Oz) and have lived in Queensland before, I love Australia as aplace to live awesome! only problem with it is there are too many Australians living there! LOL Ha Ha. But seriously, you would find much less racial tension towards minority races in Oz. the people are pretty straight up and funny. Probably depends where you go to quite a lot. Always great to take the opportunity to start a new life! I say go for it!

Take the job and come home and see what you've been missing all these years.

Ignore the opinions of weirdos you'll find them everywhere you go. We're mostly very friendly people.

If you sound like an American people will probably tease you about it.

That's just what we do.

It doesn't matter what colour your skin is, it's the American part that may cause you hassels .

Just remember, we usually don't tip just for the heck of it.
We only give a tip for exceptional service and not for someone just doing what they're paid to do.

All the answerers above are right - since you have computer access- no harm in checking out a few sites that deal with
learning all things Australiana. in particular the shortening of language. Take the time to have a look...... good luck with your decision - most Aussies will give you a fair go and then some!

You'll be just fine. If you are fun loving and can take a joke you will be fine. There is free e-book at www.letsgotoaustralia.com that will educate you on many different aspects of Australia that will help make your transition much easier.

Life is short come to Australia! You will love it and never want to go home!

Come on down, my chocolate coloured friend - plenty of room for you Down Under. As a few previous posters have stated, we're a multi-cultural country. If you're a good bloke, you'll be fine, regardless of the colour of your skin.

Be prepared, you'll probably get called a "Seppo" all the time. Seppo is short for septic tank - (rhymes with Yank). The joke being that you're both full of sh1t!!! All Americans cop that one at some stage!!!!

It won't take you long to get used to Aussie humour................

I'm not gonna lie to you, racism exists in Oz just as in any other society but racists are a minority and just personally, I love the American accent and it's true, once you go black, you never go back :P ;)

Aussies love to take the piss so don't take offence when someone pays you out. Where just havin' a go at ya!

Also, we have something here called Tall Poppy Syndrome. If you're successful and go and brag about it, we'll bring you right back down to earth and make sure any sticks up your @$$ have been removed! :P

We love our beer, our mates, the Barbie and foreigners (so long as you respect our culture).

Hope to see ya in Oz soon mate! :D
