Depends not only on the State, but also on the county.
The tax is exactly the same percentage as pay when you buy a pair of pants in a store where you live (there's additional luxury tax on expansive cars in some states.)
By the way, you have to pay sales tax even if you buy a used car from a private seller (when you register the car.)

Again each state is different. In KY you have to pay 6% sales tax on new cars. However, if the car has been previously registered in KY and the sales tax has been paid once, then you don't have to pay it again. However, there is also personal property tax that must be paid every year when you register the car and get your license. That runs about 200 a year for a 05 pick up truck.

In California, it's equivalent to the regular sales tax.. BUT.. For some of us lucky car buyers that buy the big v8's and other various sports cars/suvs/big cars, etc. we get the extra gas guzzler fee!! It varies.. Just ask your dealer when you go to buy the car.. Anyway, in all of my car buying experiences, my fiance and I have been able to talk them down enough where we pretty much got enough money off of the purchase to be equivalent to the tax on the car.. Good luck!!

It depends on what state you're in and what receipts you're given. You may have to pay according to blue book value unless you can produce plenty of written evidence that you actually paid less. On top of sales tax, you may have to pay a personal property tax in some states when you register it.

Taxes vary from place to place. You should say what country, state, and maybe even the city you will be buying in.
