I think there is a misconception that hiring a wedding coordinator or plan means giving up control of planning your wedding. Your wedding can still be planned according to you and your fiance's wishes if you select your coordinator or planner wisely. A good coordinator/planner provides guidance and assistance with carrying out your vision. While a poor coordinator/planner is someone who has their own vision for your wedding or doesn't carry out the plans as specified.
I don't think you necessarily have to have a coordinator or planner to assist you during every phase of the planning process. But I do think it is helpful to have an experienced planner oversee your rehearsal and wedding day rather than having a family member or friend do it. By having a coordinator oversee your day, your family members and friends can sit back and relax. Plus a experience coordinator or planner will be better prepared to resolve any issues that may arise at the last minute.
We hired a coordinator to assist us during the 4 weeks prior to our wedding. She was definately worth it. She re-confirmed all of our vendors arrivals, set-ups, and breakdowns. Went over the timeline with all of our venders and ceremony/reception site. Sent timelines to all of my wedding party members regarding the rehearsal and wedding day. Conducted our wedding reherasal. And took care of everything on the day of our wedding. Her assistance allowed us from having to take off more days from work and relax and enjoy everything. It really made the last few weeks of our preparation stress free. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate to hiring a coordinator or planner to assist us with some or all of the planning under our direction of course.

A good planner is worth it. But it's better to have no planner/ coordinator than a bad one. I find that friends and family often just get in the way of the professionals. We know how to fit together like puzzle pieces and often non-professional planners try to controll the spaces in which we usually fit together. A planner is supposed to be like WD40 for your wedding day. Good planners have everything that all the vendors in place even before we have to ask for anything and this is something that friends and family don't even know where to start with, because they don't do this every weekend and they don't have an eye for it yet. This means they are constantly asking the bride what they should do, instead of the bride turning around and everything she was just going to ask about is perfect.

we never asked for services from wedding coordinators or planners. it was more fun doing the decision together while planning all the things we need in our wedding. we got to know each other much better. its good to have somebody to do it for you but its much better that you made personal touches on your wedding preparations.
if you're busy and getting a planner isnt part of the budget, you should have family and friends to help you with the wedding.

Unless you are planning something very big, expensive, and extravagant... then they are a huge waste of money. If you can afford it, though, and are planning something complex, then it is worth the peace of mind of not having to worry about anything. That said, all wedding planners are not created equal. Shop around and do your research!!

My wedding planner was AWESOME. She was SUPER professional and thought of things that never entered my mind! She was very friendly and organized.
Ask for referrals. Imagine any bad events you can think of and ask them how they would handle it or if they've dealt with it in the past.
Good luck!
