"The government wants to see what income..."
I don't understand, if I made no income then why do I have to file my taxes?

What about State Taxes too?

It depends. If you make under a certain amount of money annually, then you don't have to file. If you take your adjusted income, minus your deductions, and then file the self employment forms and you still come up with a refund, then you don't have to file either. (Keep in mind that you can still get a refund even if you didn't pay any taxes.)

If you didn't have any taxable income (wages, interest, etc.) or if your income falls below the threshhold for having to file (typically $8450 for a single individual) you don't have to file. State filing requirements vary, but again, if you didn't have any income, you don't have to file.

If you had no income at all there's no need to file.

yes, the govt still wants to see what income you had and what your deductions are. You could get in big trouble if you dont file.

Unless you actually have no income at all over $600 (which is the current threshold I believe) then you have to file, even if you don't owe anything. The bean counters at the IRS like to be able to check your math. It's not that they don't trust you it's just that, well, ok it is that they don't trust you. ;)
