Yes, but you'll either need a calling card or a lot of change. If using change, a message will let you know how much to add to keep talking. I think the price depends on where you're calling.

Yes, you can. Look on the phone and it will give you explicit instructions on how to do it. You will also be given the option of having the operator dial for you or not. You can even make a collect call with a pay phone...again, you follow the explicit instructions on the phone.

Now, if you're in a country who's language you don't speak, and the instruction are conveniently not in English...then you might need some help...

In any case, price depends on where you are calling, and how long the call is, and, in some cases, the location of the phone. A "dishonest" phone company will force you to pay more in the International Terminal of an airport, simply because you are a "captive audience" as it were, you can't leave the Terminal without having to purchase a new ticket to get back in.

If you are staying in Canada/US/Mexico, you could pick-up a "pay as you go" cell, and keep it turned off except for when you need to use it to call and tell when your flight arrives. It will *generally* be cheaper than using the payphone, sometimes even when counting the roaming charges.

When using a pay phone to make a long distance phone call you have to pick up the receiver, dial your number and the operator will tell you how much to put in and for how long the call will last. Hope you have a big bag of quarters to use.

Yes, you can; it depends on the phone as to exactly how much it costs; I have made long distance calls at airports on pay phones and some cost 50 cents for up to 5 minutes or a dollar for ten minutes, for calls within the U.S.

Sure you are responsible. It is a carrier that you signed up for and let someone else use. I'd name the telephone manufacturer and have the telephone turned off. Which you could attempt to get the money from her, but when it's a small amount it could not even be worth it. Ex-female friend?
