i think it varies form child to child..

put it this way....
i have 8 kids
1 boy(oldest), 7 girls
all my girls let go of the passy wen they wer around 2
but my son is now 17..and he still uses it ocassionly..he has a lot of nightmares..and he uses this 2 comfort him a lot
it works wonders

so wat i am tryin 2 say is its totally up 2 the child, weneva they feel its rite...it will be rite

note: males tend 2 let go a lot later, due 2 maturing later then females...(take it from me lol)

Seventeen??? You must be kidding.I know there is a nerve in the roof of your mouth that if you keep pressure on it it stimulates your brain to release some kind of chemical that is soothing.Babies use it with their binky. You have a serious problem here as the social aspect of this can be very tough on your son.Take him to a therapist soon.He should by now know how to comfort himself without his binky.Try getting to the cause of the nightmares.

Well, my oldest biological baby boy wouldn't take to the pacifier, my youngest baby boy did, but only shortly. However, my daughter took to it and we couldn't go anywhere with out it. One day, she just quit needing it. She is only 22mths. But however, recently, she found one of them. Sometimes she walks around with it in her mouth. It's just a soothing thing for her. I don't say anything because it really doesn't bother me. As for your 17 year old. It really wouldn't bother me none if all he used it for was for bed. If it soothes him with his nightmares and so forth......let it. Curious though, what brought on his nightmares? Good luck hun.

You answered your own questions. But I didn't like your lecture. Not just the boys want to work on their maturity, but Mom seems as if she needs to finish highschool.
